Kaieteur Overland Birding Adventure
4 Nights/5 Days
How to Book Your Birding Trip to Guyana
Day 1 Depart Georgetown by bus for a comfortable two-hour ride along the highway to the township of Linden, a bauxite mining town. From Linden it is a six-hour dusty trip on the Mabura hill road to the Konawaruk Mountains, including a stop for lunch. Sightings of Curassows and deer are frequent along the road. Catch a ferry across the Essequibo River to the township of Mahdia, known for gold and diamond mining. Here you will change to an open-back 4x4 vehicle for a one-hour trail drive to Pamela landing on the Potaro River. The real adventure begins with a 1 1/2-hour boat trip up the Potaro River to Amatuk Falls, where the water rushes over rocks creating natural Jacuzzis. Overnight at Camp Amatuk (hammock). Dinner.
Day 2 Kaieteur Gorge. You must change to another boat above the Amatuk Falls to continue your journey, which now enters the Kaieteur Gorge. Steep mountains rise up on either side to heights of 2,000 ft., some with bare rock faces that resemble ancient temples. The one-hour boat ride will bring us to our next campsite, Waratuk Falls. Overnight at Waratuk Falls (hammock). Breakfast, Snacks, Dinner.
Day 3 Kaieteur Gorge. After breakfast, we begin the last leg of the journey. A four-hour hike or one-hour boat ride will take us from Waratuk Falls to Turkeit, a fabulous campsite with refreshing swimming in the Potaro River and a spectacular view of the Kaieteur Gorge. Overnight at Turkeit (hammock). Breakfast, Snacks, Dinner.
Day 4 Kaieteur Falls. From Turkeit we will ascend the mountain for a three-hour hike to the top of Kaieteur Falls. The ascent winds its way up the mountain through changing vegetation as the altitude rises. We will pass cool mountain streams where it is impossible to cross without a dip. The final stage of the climb is known for its steep trail, but on reaching the top all is forgotten as you catch your first glimpse of the mighty Kaieteur Falls. At dusk ,thousands of swifts gather in the sky like dark clouds then plunge into the waters near their nesting site on the rock face behind the falls. Tonight we sleep at Kaieteur Guest House (beds or hammock). Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Day 5 Departure. The early morning mist of Kaieteur gives way to a fantastic view of the falls. From Johnson View, which affords a frontal vista of the fall, we will try to have look at the Cock-of-the-Rock. The golden frog can easily be seen in the giant Bromeliads in this area. This afternoon a light aircraft will fly you back to Georgetown. Breakfast, Lunch.
